[Journal of the House of Lords], [1642 Apr 2 - May 12].

Manuscript, in a single secretary hand, of a chronological journal of proceedings in the House of Lords, including bills, resolutions, committee appointments, and orders of the house. Many of the entries refer to the refusal of John Hotham, governor of Hull, to surrender the town to King Charles I, and to Charles I's demand for troops at York to be raised against Hull. Other items in the manuscript include trials, such as that of George Benyon, "silkman of London," for contriving a seditious pamphlet against Parliament; that of Bond and Wilson, printers, for printing false pamphlets; and that of Henry, Lord Morley, concerning his role in the death of Captain Peter Clarke. The manuscript also contains orders for various peers to attend Parliament; messages from the King; and petitions by numerous individuals.
